Political Success: More evidence that pressure works
By Jim Babka

Word on the street is that John McCain is no longer pushing S. 3002, the Dietary Supplement Safety Act.

Remember, this bill was a bit of corporate welfare McCain introduced to . . .

* aid the major sports leagues with their steroid problems,
* by burdening your use of nutritional supplements.

Right about the time you were receiving our Dispatch asking you to oppose this bill, a strong rumor was spreading that McCain was throwing in the towel on this legislation. Is the rumor true?

Well, to actually withdraw the bill McCain would have to do a big mea culpa on the Senate floor. We don't expect that to happen. Instead . . .

We expect the bill to languish until it expires at the end of this Congress. But until we have news of its official death, we will need to monitor the situation, to prevent the sports leagues from convincing Congressional leaders to sneak the bill through when no one is watching, or from inserting the provisions into some other bill.

But this brings up an EXTREMELY important STRATEGIC question . . .

Why has McCain stopped pushing this bill?

Answer: Because he got HAMMERED by people like you.

We may have been a little late to this fight, but the point we keep making is again validated. Pressure works. If there's enough of it.

We've said it before, we'll say it again -- elections are Effects, not Causes. It was NOT an election outcome that made John McCain change his tune. Pressure did that, and pressure alone. If you want to win, then you must . . .

* Recruit an army
* Create a huge megaphone to make your arguments heard by everyone, everywhere, every day
* Use your army and your megaphone to pound Congress with relentless, resistance-numbing pressure

If you do these things first, then the politicians will want to (supposedly) "lead" your army. But this political response will merely be an Effect, a consequence of everything else you've done. It will not be the Cause.

Do you like winning? Do you want more victories? If so, then our strategy needs more resources. Your contribution is our budget. You can contribute here:

A monthly, credit card pledge is ideal. This gives us an operating base, and allows us to plan ahead -- to invest our resources, with confidence. Amounts as trim as $3, $5, or $10 per month add up to significant support. Please join us as a monthly pledger.

We also value generous one-time contributions. ANY amount, like $10, $25, or $35, would help. Please support our progress.

And we could use some difference makers, who can give $1,000, $2,000, or $5,000. For those who are capable, we ask you to, please, vault this "Cause" into a true pressure machine.

Please, be the Cause.

Thank you very much for your support,
