If you are a talk show host, run an organization, or maintain an active blog, you are invited to join the RTBA Coalition. This document describes the objectives of the coalition, the methods by which you can join, and the benefits and obligations of membership.
The coalition's objective is to apply unrelenting, inescapable, mind-numbing pressure on Congress to pass the “Read the Bills Act.”We want every member of Congress to constantly confront the question “Do you think you should have to read the laws you pass?”
Those who say “yes” must be hammered on relentlessly to sponsor RTBA. Those who say “no” must also be hammered relentlessly for their irresponsibility, until they submit to their fiduciary duties and the will of their constituents.
We want every member of Congress to feel surrounded. We want them to hear about RTBA constantly, from every constituent they meet, and every journalist who interviews them. No member of Congress should be able to “turn around” without hearing demands to pass RTBA.
Accomplishing this objective will require the efforts of lots of people. Talk show hosts, organizational leaders, and bloggers, have the ability to motivate large blocs of people to apply the required pressure.
If it were possible to achieve this, would you want it? Are you willing to see if it can be achieved? If so, then we urge you to participate in the RTBA Coalition.
Membership can bring you an increased audience for your radio talk show, increased traffic for your blog, and increased support for your organization.
Every new coalition member will be announced on the Downsize DC blog, and to the Downsize DC email list. Your website will be listed on a prominent roster on our blog.
Every time you talk about RTBA on your talk show, write about it on your blog, or promote it to your organization's supporters, let us know, and we'll tell DC Downsizers about it on our blog, and sometimes in our email messages.
Coalition membership will bring talk show hosts new listeners, blog publishers new readers, and organizations new supporters.
Coalition membership will also bring you a constant flow of new material for your show, blog, or website. We will provide coalition members with regular updates of the coalition's progress, and telling examples of Congress's failure to read the laws it passes.
You will be an important member of a community that is working for a common sense reform that can make a real difference in the way Congress does business.
The RTBA Coalition will be a mutually supporting network. You support and promote the “Read the Bills Act,” and we will support and promote your talk show, blog, or organization website. Talk show hosts
There are two primary obligations for talk show hosts who want to join the RTBA Coalition:
We also hope you will issue regular on-air invitations for your local Representatives and Senators to come on the show to discuss their lack of support for RTBA. We will provide you with talking points and questions you can use to counter the inevitably lame objections you will hear about why they haven't sponsored RTBA.
We predict it will be difficult to get politicians to come on the air to talk about RTBA. But you can use this reluctance to pound them relentlessly, and get your listeners really worked up and more involved with your show. You could incite your audience to also urge the relevant local politicians to come on your show. Eventually, the politicians will crack, and you could become the first person to compel someone in Congress to sponsor RTBA!
You can use RTBA to expand the reach and power of your show! To join the RTBA Coalition email us at RTBAcoalition@downsizedc.org.

DownsizeDC.org is legally a non-partisan organization. As such we tread carefully in all of our relationships with political parties. In addition, we are philosophically and temperamentally opposed to partisanship and the spirit of division it naturally breeds. DownsizeDC.org seeks to rise above the divisiveness by rejecting party politics all-together. Nevertheless . . .
We will work with nearly anyone who will help us to pass RTBA. This includes political party committees. But to keep RTBA from being pigeonholed with partisan labels, and insulate DownsizeDC.org from the divisions partisanship naturally brings, we require something special of all party committees who want to join the RTBA Coalition. Your party committee must recruit a party committee from an opposing party to join the coalition with you at the same time! For instance . . .
The relative size of the two party committees joining the coalition does not matter. What matters to us is that every party committee joining the coalition be matched by an opposing party committee. When it comes to RTBA, we are all going to be friends.
