Shrinking freedom causes excess incarceration

May 8, 2020

Too many laws means too little freedom and excess incarceration!

Tacitus said, “The more corrupt the state the more numerous the laws.” And we might add, the more people you’ll find in prison.

Two facts should grab your attention…

#1: The land of the free leads the world in per capita incarceration. There are 2.3 million people in American prisons.

#2: 175,000 of these people are serving time in federal prisons, even though the Constitution reserved responsibility for criminal law to the states.

In other words, the law enforcers are violating the supreme law of the land. And these observations should focus your desire to take action against this outrage…

Politicians enforce their laws by placing people in prison. Therefore, freedom tends to decrease as incarceration increases.

The reverse is also true — freedom must tend to increase as incarceration decreases.

But what are we to do? You can’t fight city hall or the prison-industrial complex, right?

Wrong! Both the culture and the politicians are moving in the correct direction on this issue.

Congress has even passed a major sentencing reform bill – the First Step Act.

The National Football League and major business leaders are pushing for further reform.

Five Senators are working to end the sentencing evil known as judicial findings, and we are working to help them.

Shows like Serial, 13th, and Making a Murderer are changing public attitudes about these issues.

And Agenda Setters by Downsize DC is employing new tactics — the 300 and Option Activism — to push these and other issues.

One of the most important things we can do is restore federal parole. If you would like to learn how you can use Option Activism by becoming one of the 300 in your district for this issue, please go here…
